A Lived-Experience Perspective
Sometimes Your Mind Is Moving Faster Than You Can Explain
For example, you may be talking to someone and suddenly change
the subject, which can catch the other person off guard. From
the outside, it may appear as though you are not listening or
do not care about what they are saying.
In reality, there may be so many thoughts moving through your
mind that it becomes difficult to organize them and communicate
them clearly.
Sometimes, you may feel like you have to say a thought
immediately because you are afraid you will forget it by the
time the other person finishes speaking.
You genuinely want to listen, connect, and have a meaningful
conversation, but your mind may be working faster than you can
organize what you are thinking.
It is not always a lack of interest or respect. Sometimes, it
is an ADHD mind trying to hold onto a thought, process what
someone else is saying, regulate the urge to speak, and remain
present—all at the same time.
Understanding this does not remove the importance of healthy
communication, but it can create more patience, compassion,
and understanding for someone who is genuinely trying to
connect.
