Before Exploring the Conditions
A Symptom Is Not Automatically a Diagnosis
Many people occasionally experience sadness, worry, irritability, intrusive thoughts, changes in sleep, difficulty concentrating, or emotional distress. Having one of these experiences does not automatically mean that someone has a mental illness.
A professional evaluation considers the complete pattern, including the severity and duration of symptoms, developmental and medical history, life experiences, safety, substance use, medications, physical health, and the degree to which symptoms interfere with everyday functioning.
Two people may have similar outward symptoms for very different reasons, and two people with the same diagnosis may experience it very differently.
