What Mental Health Means
Mental Health Is More Than the Absence of Illness
Mental health describes a person’s emotional and psychological state, as well as their ability to cope with stress, connect with others, manage responsibilities, express emotions, and function in daily life.
A person can have periods of strong mental health and periods when they feel overwhelmed, anxious, emotionally exhausted, disconnected, discouraged, or unable to cope as effectively as usual.
Mental health can change throughout a person’s life. It may be influenced by relationships, health, finances, work, school, trauma, discrimination, grief, major life changes, sleep, support systems, environment, and access to appropriate care.
Having mental health does not mean always feeling happy. It means having emotional and psychological needs that deserve attention, care, support, and understanding.
